Why MobileFlare exists

A GAP NOBODY FILLED

At a live event, something goes wrong. The music is loud. The crowd is dense. There is no signal. You cannot move. You need help, right now, and nobody around you knows it.

MobileFlare was built from personal experience of exactly this moment. Standing in crowds at concerts across the UK, watching performances stop for safety concerns, watching stewards struggle to locate people in distress, watching other audience members look helplessly at each other, the same question kept returning: if something serious happened right now, how would anyone know?

"I've seen performances stop mid-set at multiple concerts. I've watched stewards push through crowds toward an incident nobody could locate quickly. The performer sees something is wrong. Security sees something is wrong. But finding the person who needs help, in a standing crowd of thousands, takes time nobody has."

The answer to that question already exists in your pocket. Your phone screen is the brightest, most visible object on your person. MobileFlare simply puts it to work.

The events that shaped this

WE HAVE SEEN WHAT HAPPENS

These are not hypothetical situations. Crowd emergencies have claimed lives at events around the world, and in almost every case, the people who needed help had no reliable way to make themselves visible.

Hillsborough, 1989. 97 lives lost in a crowd crush at a football match. Survivors described being unable to communicate the severity of what was happening. The disaster changed how the world understood crowd safety, but the communication gap it exposed has never been fully solved.
Astroworld Festival, Houston, 2021. 10 people died and hundreds were injured in a crowd surge. The Netflix documentary that followed showed clearly how people in genuine danger were invisible to those with the ability to help: security, medical teams, and the performer on stage.
Raye, Manchester. Multiple stops mid-performance to address safety concerns in the crowd. Each pause cost precious time locating the person who needed assistance.
Ollie Alexander, Manchester. A medical event in the crowd. The performance stopped. Stewards responded. But the time taken to locate the individual was time that mattered.
The Script, Leeds. Another break in performance for crowd welfare. Another reminder that events which bring people together carry real, unaddressed risk.
Love Parade, Duisburg, 2010. 21 people died in a crowd crush at a music festival. Crowd pressure had been building for minutes before the situation became fatal, but those at the centre had no way to communicate the danger outward.

In every one of these situations, a visible, colour-coded signal from a phone screen would not have solved everything. But it would have made people in danger findable. And that matters.

Using MobileFlare

FOUR BUTTONS, THAT'S ALL

MobileFlare is deliberately, uncompromisingly simple. In an emergency, you will not have time to navigate menus, log in, or read instructions. The app is designed to work in the worst possible moment.

1

Open MobileFlare

The app opens directly to the four emergency buttons. No login, no loading screen, no permissions prompt. It is ready immediately.

2

Hold the button that matches your situation

Press and hold for under a second. The brief hold prevents accidental activation, an important safeguard in a crowded environment.

3

Hold your phone up

Your screen activates at full brightness in the appropriate colour. Emergency signals flash to maximise visibility. Water Please shows as a calm, steady blue screen. Hold your phone above your head. Security, stewards, medical staff, and performers can see it from distance.

4

Help comes to you

Anyone who has downloaded MobileFlare, or seen the colour code at a venue, knows exactly what you need before they reach you.

Why there's nothing to lose

EVERY REASON TO DOWNLOAD

We built MobileFlare to remove every possible barrier to adoption. If you can think of a reason not to download it, we want to hear it.

No signal required

Works completely offline. No Wi-Fi, no mobile data, no Bluetooth. It works anywhere your phone works.

Zero data collected

MobileFlare collects nothing. No name, no location, no usage data. We do not know you exist.

No registration

No account, no email, no password. Download and it works. A brief responsible use guide appears on first launch. That's it.

Free, always

MobileFlare is free to download and free to use. There are no in-app purchases, no adverts.

Instant to use

Four buttons. Under a second to activate. If you can unlock your phone, you can use MobileFlare.

Built for dark environments

Maximum screen brightness during activation. Designed to be seen across a dark venue floor.

Accessible by design

Each signal flashes at a different speed as well as a different colour. Green is slowest, yellow faster, red fastest. MobileFlare is distinguishable by colour-blind users too.

Easy to share

A built-in share button generates QR codes for both the App Store and Google Play. Show someone at an event and they can download it in seconds, before the night is over.

Spotlight

A non-emergency feature that helps friends find each other in a crowd. Choose one of four distinct colours from the main menu and show your screen. Kept completely separate from the emergency signals so there is no risk of confusion.

A message for parents

YOUR CHILD IS AT MORE EVENTS THAN EVER

Younger audiences are attending live events in record numbers. First concerts, first festivals, first experiences of large crowds, often without the adults who would know what to do if something went wrong.

The problem with telling them to "shout for help"

At a sold-out standing concert, the ambient noise level can exceed 100 decibels. A person shouting at the top of their voice will not be heard beyond three or four people in any direction. In a crowd crush, they may not be able to move at all.

Young people instinctively reach for their phones in a crisis. MobileFlare gives that instinct somewhere useful to go.

It requires no prior training, no calm thinking under pressure, and no signal. Just the ability to hold a button.

Before your child goes to their next event, spend thirty seconds showing them MobileFlare. The four colours. What each one means. Where to find the app on their home screen.

That thirty seconds is the whole conversation. The app does the rest.
